Student brings knife to Mecklenburg elementary school

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Mecklenburg County elementary schooler was taken into custody after authorities found a knife and "a drawing of the school" in their possession on Tuesday.

Mecklenburg County Public Schools shared a statement from Lauren Thompson, South Hill Elementary School's principal, regarding an incident that took place at the school on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

According to Thompson, on Tuesday, South Hill Elementary administration was informed that a student had a knife, as well as a "drawing of the school."

Staff investigated and found both of these items in the student's possession.

"As a result of the incident, the student has been referred to juvenile intake," Thompson said. "In addition, the school will apply appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct."

Thompson emphasized the importance of keeping South Hill Elementary's students safe.

"The well-being of our students and staff remains our top priority," she said. "We take all reports of potential safety concerns very seriously and will continue to maintain strict measures to ensure a safe learning environment. We also encourage students to speak up if they see or hear anything that could pose a risk to themselves or others."

School officials worked collaboratively with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office when investigating this incident.
