Study shows Va. parent needs to make minimum of $84K to support stay-at-home parent

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A study by SmartAsset shows that a single parent in Virginia needs to earn around $84,000 to support their partner staying at home to raise a young child.

SmartAsset ranked U.S. states based on the minimum income one parent would need to earn to support their partner staying at home to raise one child, foregoing the major cost of childcare, but also additional income.

Out of all 50 states, Virginia ranked 14th highest in the amount of income one parent must earn to support a partner who stays home to raise one young child, with a minimum income of $84,261.

If both parents were working, the study shows that in Virginia, they would need to earn a combined income of at least $98,176 to cover the basic expenses of raising one young child.

In addition, the cost of raising a child for two working parents in Virginia would be at least $28,330, according to the study.

The study ranked Hawaii as the top state for minimum income needed for one person to stay at home.

West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and North Dakota were ranked in the study as being amongst the most affordable places to be a stay-at-home parent.
