Suspect charged with second-degree murder after deadly stabbing in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man has been charged with second-degree murder after another man was found stabbed in a Richmond home following a reported assault Tuesday evening.

In the afternoon on Thursday, Nov. 20, the Richmond Police Department announced that the suspect in the deadly stabbing on Nov. 18, identified as 23-year-old Devonte Knott, of Richmond, was found inside an apartment on East Richmond Road.

Richmond Police officers repeatedly commanded Knott to exit the apartment. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the Richmond Police Department SWAT Team and Negotiator Team responded to assist.

Despite multiple further directives, police said Knott continued to refuse to exit. The SWAT Team then reportedly used CS gas, also referred to as tear gas, in the apartment, which reportedly resulted in Knott's surrender.

Knott was then medically treated at the scene. He was charged with second-degree murder, and police said additional charges may follow.

Knott's arrest comes after Richmond Police officers were called to the 00 block of North Thompson Street at 11:47 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, for a reported assault.

When officers arrived, they found 45-year-old Joseph Hunt inside a home with a stab wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where police said he later died due to his injuries.

According to police, detectives have determined the stabbing followed "an interaction" between Knott and Hunt.

Anyone with further information about the deadly stabbing is asked to contact Major Crimes Detective P. Torres at 804-646-3930.
