SUV driver charged with DUI, manslaughter for allegedly killing motorcyclist in Chesterfield
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Police Department has arrested and charged a Hopewell man for allegedly killing a motorcyclist in a bar parking lot while driving under the influence. Police say 59-year-old Darly Eavey of Hopewell had been drinking on Sunday, Oct. 13 when he got in his GMC Acadia SUV and struck Caleb Carabin of Chesterfield, who was thrown from his motorcycle and killed instantly. Eavey was charged with DUI and manslaughter in connection to the crash, which happened around 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the I Don't Know Sports Grille in the Chester area of Chesterfield. Steve Stratton, a regular at the bar, described the scene as chaotic. He noted that the establishment was hosting its final "Bike Day" of the season, an event aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts. Stratton, who spoke with Eavey shortly before the crash, expressed his sorrow, emphasizing the broader impact such tragedies have on the community. “It ruins a whole lot of lives," Stratton said. "Tragedies happen all the time and it seems like it's getting more frequent." He recounted the response from emergency services, who arrived promptly to secure the area. Stratton, an experienced biker himself who has been biking for decades, highlighted the importance of vigilance on the road for both drivers and motorcyclists. “Always expect the unexpected, it can happen in a blink of an eye and ruin your whole life," Stratton said. "It could've been avoided but someone didn't see someone or something, something failed." Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Chesterfield Police at 804-748-1251.
