Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with service, celebration
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg is holding a Remembrance Service and Day of Service for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., following the MLK Parade on Jan. 19.
Tabernacle Baptist Church has announced that on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -- Monday, Jan. 19 -- they will be hosting an MLK Remembrance Service followed by a Day of Service in Petersburg.
The Remembrance Service will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., following the 9 a.m. City of Petersburg Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade. The service will consist of worship, reflection and celebration of Dr. King at the church, located at 418 Halifax St.
There will be a mini-concert featuring gospel artist Cora Armstrong, as well as Wendell Givens and the Community Choir.
Rev. Dr. Warddell Jones, President of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, will deliver the keynote address. Jones will speak about continuing Dr. King's vision and work of "justice, unity,
and service."
Tabernacle Baptist Church will also be hosting, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., a Health Equity and Access Fair at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Community Life Center at 444 Halifax St. as part of their Day of Service.
UnitedHealthcare Plan of Virginia is sponsoring this event. They plan to help residents connect to vital supports, such as:
- Health screenings
- Wellness and community resources
- Outreach and assistance from onsite partner organizations
- Food distribution for families
Petersburg Parks and Leisure Services will be providing lunch.
