Teen to spend years in juvenile detention after shooting Richmond officer in hand

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 17-year-old boy will spend multiple years in juvenile detention after he shot a Richmond police officer in the hand in late 2024.

Just before 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, officers with the Richmond Police Department pulled a driver over in the 2300 block of Fairfield Avenue, as they had run a stop sign.

After seeing what authorities described as "suspicious movements," the officers ordered those inside the vehicle to get out. A teenager, identified as Davion L. Taylor Barnette, then shot one of the officers in his hand. Officers did not return fire.

Barnette proceeded to flee the scene on foot, moving east on Fairfield Avenue. Later that night, he turned himself in to police.

He was hit with four charges, including the malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer.

Barnette was 16 years old at the time of the shooting but is 17 years old as of the time of reporting.

During a quarterly crime briefing on Thursday, April 17, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards provided an update on this case.

According to Edwards, Barnette pleaded guilty to the malicious wounding charge earlier Thursday morning. Court records indicate that all other charges were dismissed. Edwards added that he was adjudicated -- or judged, in the context of court proceedings -- as an adult.

Barnette was sentenced to time in a juvenile detention facility. He will be released on probation when he turns 21, with that probation set for 10 years.

Edwards also provided an update on the condition of the officer Barnette shot, whom he identified as 1st Precinct patrol officer Lucas Murray.

According to Edwards, Murray had been with the department for six months at the time of the shooting. He has since made a full recovery and returned to duty.
