Temporary speed limit signs to be implemented on I-64 in New Kent County

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- There will be temporary variable speed limit signs implemented on Interstate 64 in New Kent in early December. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the change is intended to reduce speeding around road workers. As a part of the I-64 Gap A Widening project, VDOT in collaboration with Shirley Contracting Company, will be implementing temporary variable speed limit (VSL) signs displaying various speed limits on I-64 in between the Bottoms Bridge exit and the New Kent Providence Forge exit in New Kent County. The VSL signage will be a replacement for the static speed limit sign over a 10.7-mile section of I-64 on both sides. VDOT confirmed the system will be fully activated -- displaying various speed limits in the area based on when workers are in the work zone beginning early December. The speed limit will be 60 mph when workers are working on the roads and will return to 70 mph when workers are not present. Just like any other speed limit sign, the VSL signs will be enforceable.
