CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Anderson Family Welcome Center at the Manchester YMCA offers Conversational English classes for Spanish-speaking community members, allowing attendees to develop and strengthen speaking skills for a low cost.

8News spoke with Daniel Alvarado, YMCA of Greater Richmond's community development navigator, on Wednesday, May 21, to learn more.

Alvarado said this semester's classes have already begun, with sessions held at Manchester Family YMCA from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, running through the last week of June.

He explained that the program is designed for both adults and young adults to expand their English conversation skills in a fun, safe and supportive learning environment.

The program reportedly began in August of 2024 as a free offering, but now requires a fee of $50 for YMCA members or $70 for non-members to cover books, supplies and costs associated with computer use.

Currently, the classes are held for two levels -- beginner and intermediate. Alvarado said the YMCA has seen about 80 participants as a part of the classes.

Though classes are currently offered at one location, Alvarado said plans are in the works to expand offerings at additional YMCAs throughout the area next semester.

Alvarado said that one student who has attended the Conversational English classes over the past six months took an additional step forward and enrolled in the YMCA's Career Building series, which is held entirely in English.

"Her growth is a wonderful example of how these classes empower individuals to gain confidence and take meaningful steps toward their goals," Alvarado said.

In addition to these classes, the Manchester Family YMCA also offers mobile food distribution on the second Monday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in partnership with Feed More. The distribution is accessible to all with a Welcome Center food voucher.

The Manchester Family YMCA also offers a free story time from 6 to 7 p.m. in partnership with the Chesterfield County Public Library on the third Thursday of each month.
