‘The people’s vehicle’: Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolls into Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is rolling into multiple spots in Richmond in August, including Saturday's RVA Big Market.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 16, Richmond residents were able to check out the Wienermobile at the Azalea Garden Loop in Richmond.
Ben Capp -- who is the driver of the Wienermobile and whose hot dog name is "Bun-length Ben" -- called the hot dog "the people's vehicle."
"It's my first time in RVA," Capp said. "Very excited to be here. Lots of love for the Wienermobile in Richmond."
After making stops at Stony Point Fashion Park Summer Sounds Series on Thursday, Aug. 14, in Richmond, and NASCAR RFK driver Wienermobile meat up on Friday, Aug. 15, in Mechanicsville, the 27-foot-long wiener on wheels still has one more stop to make.
According to Capp, there are six Wienermobiles, and they began in Madison, Wis., and are still headquartered out of Madison.
He said the Wienermobile has been on the hot dog highway since 1936 and was originally inspired to create some hope for those struggling during the Great Depression.
"We relish those moments -- those 'I remember win,' those 'I saw the Wienermobile,' 'Bam!'" Capp said.

Capp shared that he took a two-week training course designed to detail the "ins and outs of the Wienermobile," called "Hot Dog High," which was taught by three retired police officers from Madison.
"RVA is a special place for the Wienermobile. There are so many hot dog heads here that just relish the opportunity to see the Wienermobile and we relish meeting all of you."
From 4 to 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, you can catch the Wienermobile at the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game at 3001 North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond.
Capp said after the Wienermobile's Richmond run, it will head to Hartford, Connecticut. Then, in about a week, he mentioned that Richmond residents can check out another Wienermobile to have the opportunity to "see a third of the fleet," Capp said.
