Three juveniles, including 12-year-old, charged in Colonial Heights crashes involving two stolen cars

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — Three juveniles are facing charges after two crashes in Colonial Heights last week involving two stolen cars, per Colonial Heights Police.

At around 3 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, officers with the Colonial Heights Police responded to a report of a crash in the Sherwood Hills area.

Upon arrival, officers spotted two vehicles in the intersection of Norwood and Biltmore Drives. Both cars turned off their headlights and fled east on Norwood Drive when police approached.

An officer then attempted a traffic stop on one of the fleeing vehicles, identified as a 2017 Hyundai. At which point, the car sped up, lost control and hit another parked vehicle in the 900 block of Forestview Drive.

Police said the Hyundai was reported stolen in Colonial Heights earlier in the evening. Both the driver, a 15-year-old male, and the passenger, a 12-year-old male, were taken into custody and transported to Southside Medical Center with minor injuries.

The other fleeing vehicle, which officers identified as a 2016 Kia, was speeding on Sherwood Drive. When another officer attempted a traffic stop, the car fled east on Sherwood Drive, lost control and hit a telephone pole and three other parked cars in the intersection of Sherwood Drive and the Boulevard.

The Kia was also reported stolen from Hopewell with Virginia tags stolen from Petersburg, per police.

The driver of the Kia, a 17-year-old male, was also taken into custody and transported to Southside Medical Center with minor injuries.

All three juveniles involved in the incident are residents of Hopewell. They are facing several charges:

  • The 17-year-old driver was charged with felony eluding, misdemeanor possession of a stolen vehicle, misdemeanor hit and run, driving without a license and curfew violation.
  • The 15-year-old driver was charged with felony grand larceny of a vehicle, felony eluding, misdemeanor conspiracy to commit grand larceny, misdemeanor hit and run, driving without a license and curfew violation.
  • The 12-year-old passenger was charged with misdemeanor conspiracy to commit grand larceny, eluding police and curfew violation.

They were released from the hospital and are being held at Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center pending a court appearance in Colonial Heights.
