Three people displaced after two-story apartment fire in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Three people are displaced after a heavy fire started from an attic access opening in a two-story apartment building in Richmond.

In the evening of Tuesday, July 8, crews with the Richmond Fire Department arrived at a report of heavy fire coming from an attic access opening in the roof of a two-story apartment building at 3434 Maury Street.

Firefighters say they cleared conditions on the second floor, and once access was gained into the attic area, they found significant fire venting in the roof. Crews opened the roof above the fire.

"Due to the structural covering of the attic floor, further openings were made on the gable end to extinguish the remainder of the fire," officials said.

The apartment had both fire and water damage, with the Red Cross assisting one woman, who was displaced.

A nearby apartment also had water damage, and two adults were displaced but had a place to stay, according to firefighters.

Property maintenance began securing the apartments for clean-up.
