Three teens, adult arrested after 19-year-old hit in head with gun in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Multiple arrests have been made in connection with a Hanover County shooting incident where, during a physical altercation, a man was hit in the head with a gun, causing it to fire.

The incident took place the evening of Tuesday, June 24 in the 7500 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. Deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene at about 8:23 p.m. after receiving reports of an altercation involving a firearm.

When they arrived, deputies found that everyone involved in the altercation had fled the area.

After they spoke with witnesses and reviewed video footage, investigators reportedly determined that four male suspects between the ages of 16 and 20 were involved in the altercation. During that altercation, one person hit an unidentified 19-year-old man in the head with a gun, causing it to fire.

Three teenagers and one adult -- all of the Ashland area -- have since been arrested in connection with the 19-year-old's assault. Further details on the juveniles will not be shared due to their age.

The adult suspect, 18-year-old Brandon Lee Drake, was hit with several charges -- four related to the incident and then an additional three charges related to his arrest. Those charges are as follows:

  • Attempted malicious wounding
  • Assault by mob
  • Using a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Brandishing a firearm
  • Reckless driving
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute

The sheriff's office thanked the community members who came forward with information on this case.

"Your tips were instrumental in advancing this investigation and played a critical role in helping us bring this case to a swift and successful resolution," authorities said.

The sheriff's office also thanked the media for bringing awareness to the investigation.
