Tips from VDH on how to prepare for winter weather
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As winter storms approach, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has offered tips for the cold weather.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the VDH shared a timeline of tips for how Virginians can prepare for the upcoming snowstorm moving into Central Virginia this weekend.
A couple of days before the storm, residents should start planning accordingly and do the following:
- Create emergency kits for your home and car.
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors within your home.
- Make sure to refuel your car and any heating sources.
The day before the winter weather hits, residents should continue to monitor weather conditions, as well as:
- Change any plans to another time.
- Ensure you have multiple ways to receive any warning messages.
- Bring all pets indoors and make sure that they have water.
The VDH recommends that during and after the snowstorm, residents should ensure they stay informed and drive only when necessary. They urge Virginians to do the following:
- Make sure to check in with your family and neighbors.
- Remember to make sure any heat source is being properly ventilated.
- If you have a generator, make sure it is at least 20 feet away from your home.
- When shoveling, remember to take it easy.
