Tractor-trailer crashes off bridge-tunnel in Virginia, Perdue Farms driver dies

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A driver for Perdue Farms is dead after a tractor-trailer crash at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) Sunday morning, according to Perdue Farms in a statement.

The crash happened at around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, sending the southbound semi overboard into the water off the west side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which includes a series of bridges and underwater tunnels.

The U.S Coast Guard and Virginia Beach Marine Police also assisted in the search for the driver.

Perdue Farms later confirmed its driver died in the crash.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," Perdeu Farms said in a statement obtained by WAVY. "He had been a valued member of our team, and his loss will be deeply felt across our organization. We are cooperating fully with authorities as they continue their investigation."

Southbound lanes of the CBBT were closed for several hours as crews worked to make emergency repairs to damaged guardrails and curbs.

CBBT Police are currently investigating the crash. Authorities have not said what may have caused the truck to go overboard.
