RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Dr. Frank Spencer Royal, Sr., a trailblazing Richmond-area doctor and civic leader, passed away on Monday after decades of service to the community.
Virginia Union University (VUU) honored Royal's legacy in a recent announcement following his passing on Monday, Feb. 2. Royal graduated from the institution in 1961, served on its board of trustees for 40 years and would eventually become chairman from 1982 to 2011.

"In Richmond, he played a pivotal role in spearheading the relocation of Richmond Community Hospital, ensuring continued access to quality care for the community," VUU said.
Throughout his 30 years as chair of the board of trustees of Meharry Medical College, where he earned his medical degree, he led a $127.5 million campaign to strengthen academic programs and infrastructure.
