Two arrested, charged with combined 100 felonies in Caroline prescription fraud case

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two Caroline residents are facing a total of 100 felony charges between them after authorities say they committed prescription fraud for two years, illegally obtaining dozens of prescriptions for controlled substances. The Caroline County Sheriff's Office reportedly spent two months investigating claims of prescription fraud at a CVS Pharmacy in the Ladysmith area of the county. That investigation began when pharmacy staff contacted the office and shared their concerns. According to the office, 45-year-old Sarah Delano and 53-year-old Derek Delano, both from Caroline's Ruther Glen area, were identified as suspects early in the investigation. Sarah Delano is accused of posing as a medical professional from an unidentified local medical facility since 2022. According to the office, she allegedly provided accurate business information to pharmacists and, since the scheme began, obtained over 50 fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances. According to the office, Sarah Delano is being held without bond while Derek Delao was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. They face 50 counts of felony prescription fraud and 50 counts of conspiracy to commit prescription fraud. Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Health Professions aided the Caroline County Sheriff's Office in its investigation.
