Two dead, two others injured after Colonial Heights high-speed chase ends in Petersburg crash, fire
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Two people are dead and two others are injured after a high-speed chase that began in Colonial Heights ended in a crash in Petersburg early Saturday morning.
At about 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, a Colonial Heights Police Department officer was monitoring drivers' speeds through a stationary radar in the 100 block of the Boulevard when they saw a speeding vehicle.
According to the Colonial Heights Police Department, a 2021 Tesla traveling southbound was reportedly found to be driving at 70 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone.
When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver did not yield and continued into the City of Petersburg along South Adams Street.
Less than a mile from where the violation was first observed, the Tesla soon lost control and hit a tree in the 20 block of Marshall Street.
The vehicle caught fire, which spread to a nearby home.
Petersburg Fire Department crews responded quickly, extinguishing both the vehicle and the house fires.
Two people in the Tesla were detained and taken to local hospitals for treatment, while two other people were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials confirmed on Saturday that there were no reported injuries of residents at the affected home.
The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is leading the investigation into the incident.
