Two hospitalized after fire at Petersburg restaurant

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Two people were hospitalized after a fire at a restaurant in Petersburg on Friday morning.

The morning of Friday, Dec. 12, crews with Petersburg Fire Rescue & Emergency Services were called to Wabi Sabi, located downtown area of the city, for a reported structure fire.

The first firefighters found a three-story masonry restaurant with "nothing showing" from the outside.

When they entered, crews found two people in the kitchen with severe burn injuries.

Crews also searched the entire building and confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated and that there was no fire extension beyond the area where the fire started.

Fire personnel worked with EMS and treated the two victims on scene. They were taken to the hospital.

Petersburg Fire Rescue & Emergency Services determined that the fire originated in the kitchen and the restaurant staff extinguished the fire before fire crews arrived.

Crews remain on scene investigating and urge people to avoid the area so units can work.
