Two Richmond officers shoot unarmed man during traffic stop

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department provided additional details on the circumstances that led to two of its officers shooting a man during a Thursday night traffic stop.

Just after 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, officers on patrol in the 2600 block of Melbourne Street noticed a vehicle that had been reported as stolen. The officers then conducted a traffic stop on that vehicle.

According to police, the driver -- an unidentified man -- pulled over, then exited the vehicle.

"When out of the vehicle, the subject ignored the officers’ commands, turned his body away from the officers, reached for his waistband and then raised his arms towards the officers," a police spokesperson said. "Two officers fired their service weapons, striking the driver."

The officers reportedly gave the man medical attention while waiting for emergency medical personnel. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and has since stabilized.

Police did not find a weapon when investigators searched both the car and the scene of the shooting.

"As is standard in officer-involved shooting investigations, all investigative findings will be sent to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for review," the spokesperson said.
