‘Unexpected health-related concerns’ force Caroline treasurer to resign
CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- "Unexpected health-related concerns" have forced Caroline County's treasurer to suddenly resign.
On Monday, Sept. 29, the county announced that its treasurer, Brittany Eisenbrown, will be resigning due to "unexpected health-related concerns." Her final day will be Sunday, Oct. 5.
As Eisenbrown's term is not set to expire until Dec. 31, 2027, the county's Board of Supervisors has petitioned the Caroline County Circuit Court to order a special election to fill the role for the remainder of said term. That election, if ordered, would be held on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026.
In the meantime, the county will petition the 15th Judicial Circuit of Virginia to appoint former Caroline County treasurer Elizabeth Curran to the role in an interim, temporary capacity, with that appointment to be effective Monday, Oct. 6.
Curran served as treasurer for over three decades before retiring in July 2023.

Notably, the Caroline County Treasurer's Office will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 1 until Monday, Oct. 6 to accommodate the transition from Eisenbrown to Curran.
A treasurer is a locality's chief financial officer, responsible for both collecting and disbursing all of its funds and managing its investments, officials said.
If you would like to potentially become Caroline's next treasurer, you must submit the required paperwork -- including a sworn statement confirming your qualifications -- by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5. You will only be eligible if you meet the following requirements:
- You are eligible to vote for Caroline's treasurer
- You have been a Virginia resident for at least one year
- As of the time of filing, you are a resident of Caroline County
