USDA releases report detailing ‘unsanitary conditions’ at Boar’s Head plant in Petersburg
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) described the unsanitary conditions of the Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc. plant in Petersburg. The report is 122 pages long, dedicated specifically to the plant in Petersburg from 2019 to September of 2024. The USDA also released similar reports based out of the plants in New Castle, Ind. and Forrest City, Ariz. The USDA detailed mold on the ceiling and walls, meat residue left on equipment and walls that were not properly cleaned, and rusty sanitation racks. The report also described a dripping condensation that at times fell on the food. Insects were found inside the plant stuck in cobwebs. This comes after a listeria outbreak linked to the Boar’s Head factory in the town of Jarratt in Greensville County took the lives of 10 people in 2024. According to a statement on Boar's Head website, the company said the violations do not meet its high standards, and that "strict food safety standards and protocols are bring embedded" in their process and procedures. It assured customers they can "confidently purchase and enjoy all Boar’s Head products you see in stores." Boar’s Head is currently facing multiple lawsuits after the listeria outbreak the the Jarratt factory in their liverwurst products. The factory has since closed. 8News has reached out to Boar's Head for comment, to which a spokesperson provided the following statement: The USDA recently conducted a broad and thorough investigation into all of our facilities, and the Company continues to operate under normal USDA oversight. The noncompliance reports do not meet our high standards. The CDC has declared last year’s recall linked to the liverwurst product as over, and the Company has discontinued manufacturing the liverwurst product. Under the guidance of the Boar’s Head Food Safety Advisory Council, we are adopting and implementing enhanced food safety interventions and programs across the entire company.
