VADOC holds procession for officer killed in inmate attack

ROANOKE, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) held a memorial procession on Thursday for Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, the man killed in an inmate attack at River North Correctional Facility earlier this week.

The procession was held on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner located at Virginia's Western District Office, courtesy of VADOC and several partner public safety agencies across the state.

The route followed Peters Creek Road, Interstate 581 North/US Route 220 North, Interstate 81 South, Interstate 77 South and Route 58 West, eventually ending at a funeral home in Independence.

On Monday, Nov. 17, Hall was reportedly attacked by 32-year-old John Holoman Russell -- who is serving nearly 12 years for different offenses. Hall was 40 years old at the time of his death.

“Thank you to the hundreds of people who either participated in this procession, or who came out to line the procession route and pay their respects to Officer Jeremy Hall,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Today’s procession honored Officer Hall’s dedication as a public servant and his commitment to keeping Virginians everywhere safe. Please continue to keep Officer Hall’s family, friends, and our public safety heroes at River North Correctional Center in your hearts and minds at this time.”

VADOC said details about Hall's memorial service will be announced in the coming days.
