VADOC releases additional information on stabbed Nottoway Correctional Center employee
NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Corrections (VDAOC) has released additional details about the Nottoway Correctional Center employee who was stabbed in May.
8News originally asked the department about the stabbed employee on Thursday, May 22.
Following the Memorial Day weekend, on Tuesday, May 27, a VADOC spokesperson responded and said that on May 8, a female corrections team member was stabbed during an incident at Nottoway Correctional Center and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
8News sent follow-up questions and VADOC replied, saying that it was processing the inquiry.
Two weeks later, on Tuesday, June 10, after 8News sent four more emails, the department provided additional details regarding the stabbing.
According to the department, the stabbed employee's title is corrections sergeant, and her injuries are "considered minor and treatable by nature." She is reportedly on leave, and the incident continues to be investigated by VADOC's Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES).
The department did not provide information on possible actions taken regarding the offending inmate(s).
"No further information will be provided at this time," a department spokesperson said.
The spokesperson further said the safety of its employees is the department's priority.
"Please also note that the safety of our agency’s corrections team members is the VADOC’s top priority," the spokesperson said. "Our officers are fully committed to the safety of all Virginians, and the VADOC thanks each of them for their dedication to serving the Commonwealth."
