VCU Libraries to host event highlighting surveillance films from civil rights era

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- VCU Libraries is set to host an event in October that will highlight recent access to police surveillance films collected by Richmond police officers throughout the civil rights era.

The virtual community event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom. It will focus on the Richmond Police Department Surveillance Collection, providing the public with online access to 112 films.

The digital collection features local meetings of the Black Panther Party, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Poor People's Campaign of 1968, marches and more. For more information on the collection, visit VCU Libraries' information page.

At the event, panelists will talk about the importance of the collection for research, related archives and why working to preserve and provide access to materials like this is important.
