VDH commissioner shares tips to stay safe during winter storm

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Ahead of the winter storm coming to Central Virginia, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) commissioner has shared three tips to stay safe.

On Friday, Jan. 23, Cameron Webb, the commissioner of the VDH, shared three tips for Virginians to prepare for the winter storm.

The three tips Webb shared include:

Pay attention to local advisories

  • Monitor weather apps and local news stations, along with alerts from the local government.
  • Weather events vary across the state, so ensure you are checking local news.

Charge devices

  • Make sure all devices are charged ahead of the storm so that you and your friends and family can check in with each other.
  • During extreme weather, it's important that people know where you are and how to find you in case of an emergency.

Have an emergency kit prepared

  • It's important to create an emergency kit for yourself, your children, your parents or your pets.
  • Medicine and medical devices should be packed, along with food for pets, in case a quick evacuation is needed.

These three tips from Webb are key to keeping yourself and your family safe during the winter storm.
