VDOT advises drivers to avoid roads until mid-morning Monday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to stay off the road until mid-morning on Monday, Jan. 26.

VDOT said in a Jan. 25 news release that drivers should avoid traveling until road conditions improve, at least by mid-morning Monday, Jan. 26, due to falling temperatures refreezing wet pavement overnight.

Drivers should remember to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary due to dangerous road conditions, as well as to help VDOT workers and emergency crews working along the roads.

The VDOT Richmond District workers are continuing to monitor and treat roads as the storm comes through Virginia. Once interstates and primary roads have been treated, they will transition to neighborhoods.

With fewer motorists on the roads, VDOT will be able to reach neighborhoods faster, according to VDOT.

There are 79 tree crews ready in Richmond to clear any trees or branches off the roads during the winter storm.

If divers have to travel anywhere with ice or snow on the road, remember these tips:

  • Do not crowd snow plows
  • Drive slower
  • Use extra caution when driving on bridges, ramps and overpasses since they become slippery first
