VDOT: High Wind Advisory in place at Norris Bridge
UPDATE: The high wind advisory for Robert O. Norris, Jr., Bridge was lifted shortly after 10:30 a.m.
LANCASTER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Due to the current weather conditions, a high wind advisory has been issued for the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge, warning drivers of large vehicles not to cross the bridge.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a high wind advisory has been placed on Norris Bridge on Route 3, between Lancaster and Middlesex counties.
As a result, high-profile vehicles, including tractor-trailers, box trucks, sizeable vans and SUVs, are advised not to cross the bridge. VDOT said trucks carrying small and empty loads may be at greater risk.
In addition, VDOT is monitoring the wind speeds of major river crossings in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas such as the Downing Bridge, Eltham Bridge, Gwynn's Island Bridge and Lord Delaware Bridge.
When winds reach 30 mph over a 30-minute period, or if there are frequent gusts of 45 mph or higher, VDOT typically issues a high wind advisory for bridges.
If winds reach 45 mph or more within 15 minutes, crews will post a closure notice for the bridge, though no physical barricades will be placed.
