VDOT to lift lane closures for Memorial Day weekend
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will lift lane closures on major highways and roads over Memorial Day weekend.
The closures will be lifted starting at noon on Friday, May 23, and will last until noon on Tuesday, May 27, according to a VDOT release.
In addition to lifting lane closures, VDOT will suspend certain highway work zones on interstates and crucial roadways. While these changes are in effect, drivers may still see semi-permanent work zones that will remain in place.
VDOT also provided several tips to help people travel safely during the holiday weekend:
- Buckle up and ensure all passengers and car seats are secured.
- Put the phone down and don't drive distracted.
- Be patient and follow the posted speed limit.
- Be familiar with the highway mile marker signs and refer to them if emergency responders need to be sent out.
- Take breaks during long drives.
- Obey the "Move Over" law -- requiring drivers to move over one lane for vehicles with flashing lights, flares or warning signs that are stopped on the side of the road.
