Virginia Attorney General signs letter asking Costco to end its DEI policies

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has signed a letter, alongside multiple other state attorneys general, urging the CEO of Costco to end "unlawful" diversity, equity and inclusion policies at the store. Miyares has signed a letter to the president and CEO of Costco, Ron Vachris, alongside 18 other state attorneys general to urge Costco to "end all unlawful discrimination imposed by the company through diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) policies." "Although Costco’s motto is 'do the right thing,' it appears that the company is doing the wrong thing—clinging to DEI policies that courts and businesses have rejected as illegal," the letter reads. The letter then references President Donald Trump's executive order titled "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-based Opportunity," which encourages the private sector to end "illegal DEI discrimination and preferences." According to the attorneys general, some of the companies that have reportedly pulled back on their DEI policies include Amazon, Ford, McDonald's, Meta and Walmart. The letter alleges that Costco has "doubled down" on DEI and asks the store to notify the attorneys general when it has repealed its DEI policies or explain why it has failed to do so within 30 days. The board reportedly said it believes “our commitment to an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary. The report requested by this proposal would not provide meaningful additional information.”
