Virginia DCR, Virginia State Parks launch Ranger Conservation Corps internship program

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Virginia State Parks have launched the Ranger Conservation Corps, a new internship program.

Announced on Thursday, Nov. 6, the Ranger Conservation Corps internship is reportedly designed to create career pathways in outdoor recreation and conservation while strengthening park operations throughout Virginia.

The internship program combines elements of past programs, such as the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps and the Park Ranger Career Development Program.

Ranger Conservation Corps also provides hands-on, immersive training for interns across a wide range of park operations, offering multiple career-track options.

College students, recent graduates, young professionals and others who are looking for hands-on experience in conservation, recreation, education and park management are encouraged to apply, according to a DCR spokesperson.

The application period for the 2026 cohort will be open from Dec. 15, 2025, through Jan. 9, 2026. There are multiple opportunities available, but space is limited and selections are made through a competitive process.

Selected interns will begin service in the summer of 2026, and will work an average of 25 to 40 hours per week. Program length varies by track, ranging from 12 weeks initially to 9 months for future opportunities.

Intern positions will reportedly include education and interpretation placements, park operations internships and final capstone project roles. Participants will also have opportunities for future internships, according to DCR.

In most cases, interns will serve in parks with available housing.

The program is intended to prepare participants for long-term careers with DCR, state parks and other conservation organizations.
