Virginia DWR to host guided tour of Bosher’s Dam for World Fish Migration Day
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Looking to learn more about fish migration? The Virginia Department of Wildlife (DWR) is offering visitors a fun way to explore the topic with a guided tour of Bosher's Dam and Fishway as part of World Fish Migration Day.
On Saturday, May 2, community members are invited to stop by the Bosher’s Dam and Fishway at 8727 River Road, accessed through Roslyn Retreat Center, for a guided walking tour.
The tour will run from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will be led by DWR fish passage coordinator Alan Weaver and his team. The tour offers Virginians a behind-the-scenes look at the fishway inside the dam.
Visitors will learn directly from DWR staff about the history of the fishway and how the fish passage program helps maintain healthy populations.
The department urges visitors to wear appropriate seasonal attire and sturdy walking shoes, as the tour will include a 0.40-mile walk from the parking area down a gravel road to the fishway.
According to a release, there is also a walkway on the fishway with handrails, but climbing a few short flights of stairs is required to access it. The counting room and window where Shad Cam is located can be viewed from above, though officials said there is no public entry into the counting room.
Registration will be open until noon on Thursday, April 30. Those under age 17 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Officials said this is in addition to the satellite event for World Fish Migration Day, which will have events and programs at Ancarrows Landing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 2.
