Virginia House to hold special election for Mike Jones’ seat

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Del. Mike Jones (D-Richmond) has announced his resignation from the Virginia House of Delegates after winning the Democratic firehouse primary over the weekend.

The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) announced Sunday, Dec. 7, that Jones has won its nomination for Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi's state Senate seat. The seat will be vacant when Hashmi takes office as Virginia's 43rd lieutenant governor.

Per his resignation letter, Jones will step down from his post representing House District 77 on Jan. 17, 2026. He is set to face off against the Republican nominee, John Thomas, in the special general election on Jan. 6, 2026.

A special election to fill Jones' House seat has also been set for Jan. 6, 2026, per House Speaker Don Scott (D-Portsmouth).

Candidates looking to file for the vacant seat should do so by 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, per Scott's announcement.
