Virginia Lottery makes $901 million in profits for fiscal year 2025

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Lottery has generated $901 million in profit for fiscal year 2025 (FY25), making it the second-highest profit total in the company's almost four decade history.

This profit total of $901 million saw a 3.5% decrease from a record-setting $934 million in lottery earnings from last year.

The biggest win of FY25 was a Mega Millions jackpot that was worth around $348 million, and was won by someone who purchased the ticket at a convenience store in Burgess, Virginia, according to the Virginia Lottery.

“The profit from our games goes into the state’s Lottery Proceeds Fund, which benefits every school division in the Commonwealth,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Khalid Jones. “The fund supports several essential K-12 education programs, and approximately one-third of the profits allocated to each division is discretionary funding for that division to address their priority needs.”

All profits made by the company go towards Virginia’s K-12 public schools.
