Virginia minimum wage rate to increase starting next year
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The minimum wage rate in Virginia will increase at the start of next year, in accordance with state law.
The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry recently put out a release stating that the minimum wage rate will increase to $12.77 starting Jan. 1, 2026 -- which is a 36-cent increase from the current minimum wage rate of $12.41.
“Virginia’s Minimum Wage Act allows for gradual adjustment of the minimum wage rate in response to economic conditions,” said DOLI Commissioner Gary G. Pan. “The new minimum wage will ensure the Commonwealth remains the leading destination for businesses and job seekers alike.”
This amount is decided based on calculations done with the current minimum wage and its relation to the percentage increase of the United States Average Consumer Price Index, according to the release.
While the minimum wage applies to the majority of Virginia employees, there are exemptions. For example, tipped employees must be paid $2.13 an hour, but their total earnings -- including wages and tips -- must meet the minimum wage rate.
