Virginia roads clear after winter storm, but VDOT work continues
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – Virginia is beginning to dig out after a winter storm blanketed the state, but officials are urging continued caution as crews work to clear remaining roadways.
“Monday, Tuesday we pretreated pretty much the entire days. A vast majority of them are clear,” said Tanveer Chowdhury, VDOT Richmond Maintenance Engineer.
Chowdhury detailed how crews have been working in 24-hour shifts, prioritizing the busiest roadways first.
“So, as of right now, our interstates are pretty much clear. Primaries are mostly clear. And then we are just getting into the secondary roads and subdivisions starting this afternoon,” Chowdhury said.
VDOT’s Richmond District oversees snow removal activities on approximately 19,314 lane miles of roads in 14 counties in Central Virginia:
- Amelia County
- Brunswick County
- Charles City County
- Chesterfield County
- Dinwiddie County
- Goochland County
- Hanover County
- Henrico County (primary routes only)
- Lunenburg County
- Mecklenburg County
- New Kent County
- Nottoway County
- Powhatan County
- Prince George County
According to VDOT, district-maintained interstate and primary routes are numbered 1-599 and secondary routes are numbered 600+. Henrico County provides snow removal for their secondary roads -- numbered 600 and above -- and subdivision streets.
Cities that provide their own snow removal include Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond, and the towns of Ashland, Blackstone, Chase City and South Hill.
Chowdhury asked for patience as crews continue working throughout the night.
“Give the snow plows and other VDOT equipment and contractors’ equipment that are working on the road enough space so that we can perform our work,” he urged.
