Virginia Tech basketball outlasts UVA in Charlottesville
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Jaden Schutt scored a career-high 18 points, and Tobi Lawal added 17 as Virginia Tech edged Virginia 75-74 on Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena. The win was the Hokies' first in Charlottesville since 2018 and their first back-to-back wins in the rivalry since 2010. It also moved VT closer in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash standings at 5.5-2.5. Virginia Tech built a 69-56 lead after a 9-0 run with 6:32 left, but Virginia fought back. Andrew Rohde’s basket cut the deficit to 75-72 with 45 seconds remaining. With eight seconds left, Taine Murray grabbed a rebound, and Isaac McKneely was fouled before attempting a three. He made both free throws, but Mylyjael Poteat missed two on the other end. Virginia had one last chance, but Rohde’s floater rolled off the rim as time expired. Schutt hit four threes and finished with five rebounds. Lawal also had five boards. McKneely led Virginia with 19 points and seven assists, while Rohde, Dai Dai Ames, and Murray all scored in double figures. Schutt’s 13 first-half points helped VT take a 38-31 lead at halftime. McKneely had nine to lead UVA. The Hokies return home to face SMU on Wednesday at 9 p.m.
