Virginia War Memorial commemorates Black History Month with special program spotlighting African American veterans
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia War Memorial announced that it will commemorate Black History Month with a special program titled "GENERATIONS: African Americans and Legacies of Military Service," which will shine a spotlight on the contributions of African American military veterans from Virginia.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m., members of the public are invited to the Virginia War Memorial to attend the free program.
"GENERATIONS: African Americans and Legacies of Military Service" gives attendees an inside look at what serving our country was like from the perspective of African American veterans from Virginia.
A panel of these veterans will also share memories of their time serving in the U.S. Armed Forces while exploring their families' traditions of military service.
“African Americans have served in every conflict from the American Revolution to the Global War on Terrorism,” said Dr. Clay Mountcastle, Virginia War Memorial Director. “The names of many African American heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in combat from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan are etched on the walls of the Shrine of Memory here at the Memorial.”
