Virginia’s fifth fall foliage report of 2025 shows southwestern portions nearing peak

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Forestry's week 5 fall foliage report for 2025 has been released, showing that the southwestern portions of the state are about to reach peak colors.

Posted on Thursday, Oct. 23, the department said all of southwestern Virginia and the Alleghanies are near, at or just past peak -- with the Shenandoah Valley and northern Blue Ridge expected to approach peak colors this weekend.

"Lets admit it: this fall color is a little duller than it could have been with perfect weather conditions," the report read. "That said, fall in Virginia is always a beautiful season!"

According to the department, leaf peepers should watch out for mid-season standouts including yellow hickories and flaming red maples.

"Bear in mind that as leaves change color and loosen their grip, windy conditions will blow many of them off the trees, so catch them while you can," the department warned.

Oak fans might have to be patient this year, as the department said there's a chance they will be late to the party, but people should be on the lookout for scattered changing branches throughout the region.
