Virginia’s superintendent of public instruction Lisa Coons resigns after nearly two years in position

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia's superintendent of public instruction Lisa Coons announced her resignation on Friday after nearly two years in the position.

In a message shared on X on Friday evening, March 14, Coons said that she has decided to "pursue new opportunities."

Coons was appointed to the role by Governor Glenn Youngkin on March 22, 2023, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Following her resignation, the Virginia School Boards Association expressed its appreciation and gratitude for Coons in a statement.

"VSBA extends our sincere gratitude for the service of Dr. Lisa Coons to the Commonwealth of Virginia as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction," the association said, in part. "Her leadership, dedication, and commitment to Virginia’s public schools have left a lasting impact on students, educators, and school boards across the state."
