Volunteers, soldiers unite to beautify Hopewell’s key entrances

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- Volunteers, city leaders and local soldiers recently came together to make Hopewell a little more beautiful, cleaning up over 100 pounds of litter in the process.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Hopewell's key entrances were beautified by volunteers with Keep Hopewell Beautiful (KHB), the Wonder City Garden Club and soldiers from Fort Lee.

The effort, led by city councilor Lovena Rapole and KHB members Carol Carr and Stephanie Dayberry, focused on the LOVE and Welcome signs on Route 36.

Fresh mulch and new plants were placed at both sign locations, the city said. The LOVE sign had its paint retouched and the Welcome sign received a good cleaning.

In addition to these landscaping improvements, the group picked up about 115 pounds of litter.

“This project shows what can happen when people come together to take pride in their city,” Rapole said in an Oct. 28 press release from the city. “We’re especially grateful for the Fort Lee soldiers who rolled up their sleeves to help us make Hopewell’s entrances shine, and to the KHB members whose dedication keeps these projects moving forward.”

A grant from Keep America Beautiful, per the city, of which KHB is a local affiliate, funded this project. All supplies used were purchased locally, "helping to support Hopewell’s economy while promoting environmental stewardship," per the city.

Following this community beautification effort, the city is looking for a long-term "Adopt-A-Spot" partner to ensure these sites remain tidy.
