VSU receives largest single-donor gift in school history with $50 million gift

ETTRICK, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State University (VSU) has received its largest single-donor gift in school history, with a $50 million gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

According to a release from VSU, the university's record-breaking donation is the largest in its 143-year history and will be used to provide students with broader opportunities. This includes a focus on academic excellence, innovation, student success, and leadership development, encompassing experiential learning and career readiness.

The $50 million donation marks Scott's second historic contribution to VSU in just five years, surpassing her $30 million donation in 2020, as part of her continued investment in the nation’s oldest public historically Black land-grant university.

“Ms. Scott’s generosity and trust in our mission will change the trajectory of Virginia State University for generations to come,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. "Her investment allows us to continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and expand our reach to more students who deserve access to a world-class education. For 143 years, VSU has stood as a beacon of opportunity, and with this transformational gift, our future shines even brighter.”

Scott's philanthropy reportedly focuses on demonstrating exceptional leadership, strong community impact, and a proven commitment to equity, according to a release. The university said she has donated billions to colleges, universities and nonprofits in the U.S.

She has also donated to Alabama State University and Alcorn State University,
