WATCH: Spanberger provides update on Virginia preparations ahead of ‘catastrophic’ storm
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Gov. Abigail Spanberger provided an update for Virginians on the weekend's incoming winter storm.
"I want to begin by giving a couple updates on where we are in our preparation for what we are anticipating to be a catastrophic storm," Spanberger said. "There will be dangerous ice accumulation, we know that the impact of this storm will tremendous."
The press conference began shortly after noon on Saturday, Jan. 24, and covered the state's preparatory actions and urge Virginians to prepare accordingly.
The storm is expected to bring several inches of snow, freezing rain and dangerous ice accumulations to Virginia, which are likely to cause widespread power outages.

Our StormTracker8 team is expecting that this system will bring some snow to the region at first, starting around dinnertime on Saturday, Jan. 24. The snow will then become sleet and freezing rain in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 25 — and that freezing rain will quickly freeze into ice. As the rain continues to fall through early Monday, Jan. 26, this ice will build up, creating hazardous conditions.
Spanberger previously declared a state of emergency across Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 22, allowing for the activation of additional resources that can be used to support the Commonwealth through the storm.
According to Spanberger's Saturday update, VDOT has completed its pretreatment of Virginia roads and has officially begun 24-hour operations.
"Those who live in housing subdivisions need to be aware that it may be 24 to 48 hours -- or, in some cases, more -- after the snow has stopped before the roads in their subdivisions will be clear."
