Weather University: Tuesday’s winter storm

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- StormTracker8 Meteorologists Jacqueline Waters and Matt DiNardo sat down in the WRIC NOW livestreaming studio on Monday to discuss what Central Virginia could see from the winter storm moving in tomorrow.

Waters and DiNardo talked heavily on what makes this forecast tricky and the specifics on temperature profiles. Temperatures will be below freezing at the start of the event, both at the surface and aloft, which means we will all start out with snow flurries. We will then start to slowly see a transition to sleet, and then rain, once warmer air moves in from the south.

Highest accumulations will be north of Doswell as very little sleet will mix in and snow will continue for the duration of the storm. This is the pink area where we will see 7"-10" of snow.

The white and grey contours are the trickiest because accumulations really depend on when that transition moves in. 4"-7" is expected from Farmville to Tappahannock including all of Metro Richmond (highlighted in white). Further south of that area (highlighted in grey), 2"-4" is expected before making the transition to sleet and then rain.

For the southeastern part of the state from Emporia towards the Tidewater, a dusting to 2" is possible before transitioning to rain showers.

Snow flurries look to start as early as 9-10 a.m. and for some areas (north of Doswell) it won't move out until the overnight hours on Wednesday. Once we make the transition to sleet/rain the snow will start to wash away in many areas.

This will be a full day event and will bring poor road conditions. Please continue to stay updated with the StormTracker8 team for the latest.
