Which Thanksgiving pie flavor is Virginia’s surprise favorite?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- From sweet potato to pumpkin to pecan, there’s no shortage of potential pies for your Thanksgiving table. But which flavor has Virginians particularly eager for another slice?

Ahead of Thursday's Thanksgiving celebrations, Instacart took a look at purchasing data from 2024 to get an idea of America's pie-picking habits. Specifically, researchers aimed to identify the most distinctive pie preferences in each state.

Based on that data, Virginians' uniquely-popular pie of choice is the chocolate pie -- which is a bit of an underdog when compared to nationwide buying habits. Only two other states share this preference: Kentucky -- one of Virginia's neighbors -- and Wyoming.

Meanwhile, the Commonwealth's northern and southern neighbors, Maryland and North Carolina, respectively -- would rather see a sweet potato pie amongst their Thanksgiving feast, per Instacart. West Virginia is the only state that prefers lemon pie.

Nationally, the pumpkin pie won out among last-minute shoppers, followed by apple, pecan and sweet potato, Instacart said.
