The wildlife center said the name Cosmos is inspired by the vast, starry sky as opossums are nocturnal animals. Additionally, the Cosmos flower shares a connection with the center's previous ambassador Marigold, to which the Cosmos flower is a cousin.

"With this name, Cosmos will carry on Marigold's legacy of teaching the world about these often misunderstood creatures," the Wildlife Center of Virginia said in its press release.
The center raised a total of $10,025 from the public's votes which officials said will directly benefit Cosmos and the many other opossums who come to the center with life-threatening injuries.
