Woman dead after Chesterfield house fire, police investigating cause

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A woman is dead after a house fire in Chesterfield County on Saturday afternoon.

At around 12:27 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, crews with Chesterfield Fire and EMS were called to the 4200 block of Richwine Road for the report of a fire.

Officials said crews responded to the scene at 12:31 p.m. and reported the fire was in a room at the front of a house. Crews were able to get the fire under control within 40 minutes.

According to Chesterfield Fire and EMS, a woman died due to the house fire.

Additionally, police said that two officers and one firefighter "suffered fire-related injuries." All three were taken to local hospitals with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening. There were also cats inside the home, and according to officials, crews saved as many as they could.

"With something like this happening today, it's very tragic. But we want to put that message out there -- take the time this evening with your kids, check the smoke detector, change the batteries, vacuum the dust out of them so the sensors are clean and maybe talk to your family about a fire escape plan," said Chesterfield Captain Deputy Fire Marshal Joe Harvey.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
