World Heart Day: Health officials share risk factors, symptoms and more
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Sept. 29 marks World Heart Day, prompting Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) to remind people of how they can decrease their risk of heart disease and stroke.
The number one cause of death in Virginia is heart disease, said officials. In the United States alone, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds, per a release.
"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both Richmond City and Henrico County, and our region has higher hospitalizations rates for heart disease and hypertension than the state average,” said RHHD population health manager Tamara Jones-Groves. “Small steps like eating healthy, staying active, and getting regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can save lives.”
According to the CDC, the most common type of heart disease un the U.S. is coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack.
One of the major risk factors for heart disease and stroke is high blood pressure. Officials shared other leading risk factors such as:
- High LDL (bad) cholesterol
- Smoking
- Poor nutrition
- Physical inactivity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Obesity
Officials said that people are more likely to survive heart attacks if they know the signs and symptoms, which include:
- Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back
- Feeling weak, light-headed or faint
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulder
- Shortness of breath
People are encouraged to call 911 immediately if they think someone is having a heart attack.
