19-year-old charged with murder after man shot, killed outside Richmond church

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder after a deadly shooting took place outside of a Richmond church in October.

According to the Richmond Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of West Cary Street at 4:29 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, for the report of a person shot.

Once on scene, officers found 36-year-old Kwaivon Dejesus with an apparent gunshot wound outside the church. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died due to his injuries.

Officials said that detectives detained a possible suspect the evening following the shooting.

Following a grand jury indictment, 19-year-old Kordell Wall has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

An initial investigation suggests that the shooting happened after an altercation between Dejesus and Wall, authorities said.
