20-year-old Chesterfield man sentenced after April shooting near VCU

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 20-year-old Chesterfield man has been sentenced in connection with a reported shooting near Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) campus in April.
On Monday, Sept. 30, 20-year-old Carl Skinner-Torres was sentenced to six years with four years suspended for the charges of possessing a gun as a nonviolent felon and brandishing a firearm.
The gun possession charge was amended from the initial charge of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Previous charges he faced, including abduction by force, shooting a firearm from a vehicle, and assault and battery, were marked in online court records as nolle prosequi, meaning they were dismissed, as the state declined to prosecute.
This comes after officers with the Richmond Police Department and VCU Police Department were called to the 600 block of Brook Road for the report of a shooting into an occupied vehicle at 9:37 p.m. on April 10.
Officials were reportedly notified that the victim, a woman, had driven to a local hospital. There were no injuries, according to police.
Less than an hour later, at 9:52 p.m., VCU Police officers were called to the 1100 block of West Broad Street after it was reported a man had been brandishing a firearm.
VCU officers responded, detained the male and seized a firearm. Richmond Police officers also responded and recovered a second firearm, according to officials.
Skinner-Torres of North Chesterfield was arrested and initially charged with weapons laws offenses, according to police.
VCU released an alert about the reported shooting that night.
