58-year-old identified as man killed in deadly Chesterfield crash

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 58-year-old has been identified as the man who died after being hit by a vehicle at a Chesterfield intersection Monday morning.

According to the Chesterfield Police Department, officers responded to the report of a crash with injuries at 5:21 a.m. on Monday, March 23 at the intersection of Newbys Bridge Road and Newbys Mill Drive.

When officers arrived, they spoke to a person who said they witnessed a man, 58-year-old Michael F. Ortiz, down in the roadway with a bicycle.

As the individual went to check on Ortiz, a vehicle traveling southbound on Newbys Bridge Road hit him. A second vehicle then hit the first vehicle but did not hit Ortiz, police said.

Ortiz was taken to Chippenham Hospital where he was later pronounce dead, according to authorities.

Police said that while it was unknown how Ortiz initially came to be lying on the ground, they believe he was riding his bicycle before he was hit.

All involved drivers remained at the scene and were cooperative with police.
